The Tuareg/desert blues genre has had its fans for quite some time, and it has been building, yet sometimes a style needs a charismatic star to burst through. Bombino came along, and the overlap between the world music fans and the festival-goers found their new guitar hero. To be sure, Bombino had the chops and the talent. Yet his recorded output never quite lived up to his potential because those who come out of a performance tradition need the stage. Bombino was precisely the kind of artist who needed to put out a live album. Some artists thrive in a studio, with control of the studio. Some thrive on the energy of the stage and need that to come fully alive. That’s Bombino.
